The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating the death of a woman in Oregon within two weeks after she was inoculated with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, the Oregon Health Authority announced Thursday.

The Oregon woman, who was not identified and was in her 50s, received a dose of the J&J vaccine prior to the US issuing a pause on the distribution of the vaccine , citing concerns over rare blood clots.

Six American women who received the J&J vaccine reported the blood clot within two weeks of being vaccinated. More than 8 million doses of the J&J vaccine have been administered in the US, and the CDC is investigating whether they are related.

"She developed a rare but serious blood clot within two weeks following vaccination," the OHA said in the statement. "This blood clot was seen in combination with very low platelets."

Dr. Shimi Sharief, senior health advisor with the Oregon Health Authority, told reporters that the woman's symptoms were consistent with that of the other rare blood clot cases. Symptoms for this type of clot include severe and unusual headache, shortness of breath, stroke-like symptoms, abdominal pain, and small microbleeds.

Sharief emphasized that the possible adverse effect is very rare.

The Oregon woman is the second death associated with the CDC investigation into the connection between the blood clots and the J&J vaccine. Sharief said that to her knowledge they are not investigating any other cases in the state.

An independent advisory panel for the CDC will meet on April 23 to discuss the future use and distribution of the J&J vaccine - 10 days after the US issued the pause on the vaccine. The death of the Oregon woman was publicly disclosed as it will be discussed during the meeting on Friday.
