Emmys 2020: 'Schitt's Creek' sweeps comedy categories, wins for best series
Brian Truitt | USA TODAY
The hit Canad comedy "Schitt's Creek" came out swinging on a very weird Emmy Awards night Sunday, sweeping the competition with seven early wins including best comedy series.
Series stars Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara won for lead actor and actress in a comedy at the the annual awards-season kickoff, which – due to COVID-19 – is coming to audiences virtually, with Jimmy Kimmel hosting alone in Los Angeles' Staples Center and winners and nominees appearing via video.
"Schitt's Creek" co-star Daniel Levy took honors for supporting comedy actor and best comedy writing, Annie Murphy snagged supporting comedy actress, and the show also won for directing.
"Watchmen" vies for limited series against "Little Fires Everywhere," "Mrs. America," "Unbelievable" and "Unorthodox." "The Handmaid's Tale" is the only show since 2015 not named "Game of Thrones" to win best drama series, and this year it'll go up against "Better Call Saul," "The Crown," "Killing Eve," "The Mandalorian," "Ozark," "Stranger Things" and "Succession."
A handful of awards were handed out at Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies held over the past week, including guest actors and best TV movie.
