The hitmaker, best known for the original version of “Tossin’ and Turnin’ “, which he recorded in the fall of 1960 and went on to sit atop the Billboard Hot 100 the following summer, died in late April 2020 after a bout with pneumonia, Billboard confirmed on Saturday, June 13, 2020.

Lewis’ hit is one of the biggest of the 1960s, being named Billboard’s Number One single of 1961. It also topped Rolling Stone’s 20 Biggest Songs of the Summer: The 1960s list, published in 2019.

Despite the success of the track, Lewis would only release one more top 10 single during his career, 1961’s “One Track Mind”, before his recording career came to a halt.
