Clemson: 28 members of athletics department test positive for COVID-19 in June
Dan Wolken USA TODAYClemson announced Friday that 28 members of its athletics department had tested positive for COVID-19 in the month of June out of 315 tests, constituting the biggest known outbreak of the coronavirus since college athletes returned to campus for workouts.
The vast majority of those positive tests were football players and staff, though Clemson did not break down numbers of positive tests by sport. A week ago, Clemson announced that two football players and one men’s basketball player had tested positive.
The school said that the individuals who tested positive would isolate for at least 10 days and that close contacts had been notified and asked to self-quarantine. “Most” of the cases are asymptomatic, according to the school, and none have required hospitalization. The school did not indicate whether individual workouts for football had been shut down as a result of the significant number of positives.
Pickens County, where the university is located, has seen an uptick in the rate of new cases since its Phase 1 reopening. Two bars in downtown Clemson closed this week after an employee tested positive for the virus, according to the Greenville News.
No Clemson athletes have self-identified yet on social media as being among the positive cases. The Tigers are expected to be the No. 1-ranked team in the preseason polls later this summer.
According to a database compiled by USA TODAY Sports, Clemson is at least the 29th NCAA Division I school to have reported positive coronavirus tests.
